The coppice system, once widespread, may again play a role within the ongoing climate change and related green-economy issues. Current surveys are outlined and updated rules of management are highlighted. Meanings and connections between conservation and forestry are discussed.
Mediterranean regions landscapes are cultural systems with forests characterized by the coppice practices. The extent of coppice systems is reviewed and the main cultivation techniques are discussed. The recovery of the practice is a necessary process to achieve sustainability.
